Likings and Loves for the Sub-Human
Lewis notices the difference between like and love and starts by taking about likes which derive from pleasure. He identifies 2 kinds of pleasure: Need-Pleasures and Pleasures of Appreciation. A Need-Pleasure is akin to the pleasure of drinking a cold glass of water when you are thirsty. The pleasure is real, but it doesn't last. A pleasure of appreciation is like a good bottle of wine for a connoisseur. Need-pleasures relate closely to Need-Love. A-Ps are more complex. They are the starting point for our concept of beauty. In contemplating A-P Lewis realizes there is a third kind of love (see the Introduction). It is worship as a result of love.
He talks about love of nature and how it cannot teach you that God exists. Nature can give glory a meaning for some people. And, nature (creation) can give us hints of the "uncreated" for creation is derived from the creator and in must reflect it in some fashion. There is no direct path via nature to an increasing knowledge of God. That path dies out quickly. And love of nature can turn quickly into a nature religion. "And then, even if it does not lead us to the Dark Gods, it will lead us to a great deal of nonsense."
He discusses love of country in depth, which he concludes is not bad, unless it is corrupted.
