Life Together was written in 1938 during the pre war buildup and tensions in Germany. Bonhoeffer was disappointed, even angry, that the church had kowtowed to Hitler. His interesting in community began with his two theses and continued during the time he oversaw the Finkenwalde seminary. Before he started the seminary, he visited several monasteries in England.
At the seminary, he started a "Brother's House" which was a group of men who were more permanent residents at the seminary living in a kind of monastic community.
