The Important “Commandments” Are Not Always Seen
The Leviticus text (and the 10 commandments) sets out the moral boundaries for a moral and religious society. in Matthew, Jesus changes the reference frame dramatically.
"You could obey the Ten Commandments perfectly all of your life and never come close to the mark that Jesus sets for the final judgment. Yet the promise and seed is entirely there in Leviticus 19: 18: “You must love your neighbor as you love yourself.”
I sometimes feel pretty good about the 10 commandments. But I rarely feel good about the standard set by Jesus. I am surely a goat most of the time. Rohr’s prayer for the day is one I should pray frequently. “Loving God, allow me to be a sheep at least once in a while, and never let me forget that most of my life I have been a goat.”
