Chapter 5: Israel
Jews have a connection to Israel and Jerusalem.
Longing, Hope, and Promise
The land is promised and given before anything else.
Fulfilling All the Mitzvoth
Living in the land was better than living outside Israel, even if the place where one lived was primarily Jewish.
A Place to Be Safe Heschel and the People of God
The Jews have never been really safe in history. Jew-hatred turned to anti-semitism. That lead to the movement to have an Israeli state. That happened after WWII. Jew. "For Israel means both land and people. And throughout its long and bitter history, to be part of one was to be part of, or at least long for, the other. Israel mattered."
Christian Reflections
"One of the great differences between Christianity and Judaism is that from the beginning Christianity aspired to be a universal faith.” Paul made it quite clear that Christianity was open to anyone. Judaism is not a universal tradition, but a particular one.” "It is one of the burdens of this book to struggle with the issue of the universal and the particular, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of all the earth and, for Christians, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ."
