Chapter 7: Sabbath
The Rhythm of Reconciliation
“The Sabbath is a reminder that time is ‘eternity in disguise’ and that we belong to eternity.
THE WORLD OF TOTAL WORK. We come close to worshipping work in American culture.
SABBATH ECONOMICS. Sabbath is first mentioned in the story of the manna where the Israelites were told on the 6th day to gather enough for two days. Three lessons from this story.
- God’s people learned the lesson of enough.
- God taught his people the value of redistribution.
- God taught the people about sabbath faith and discipline.
EXPERIMENTING WITH SABBATH DELIGHT. The sabbath should be a day in which we pause out striving and start abiding. We should do things that delight us in the presence of God. One of the author’s families had screenless sabbaths.
SABBATH IMAGINATION. “He who has him mind on taking, no longer has it on what he has taken.” Michel de Montaigne. We have to approach to life as either acquisitive or inquisitive—it can’t be both.
